August 31,2005 It is my pleasure to write this letter of reference for Blanca M. Sherwin. In my capacity as the Technical Writer for the Public Safety & Security division I worked with Ms. Sherwin on creating the Spanish for Emergency Responders course for the Texas A&M University System Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in 2004. Ms. Sherwin served as a Subject Matter Expert for this course and provided valuable guidance guidelines provided by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE), the curriculum team was able to produce practical tools for teaching Spanish to emergency responders. These tools include a classroom manual, audio CD, and interactive CD-ROM, and a pocket-sized field guide. Over 1,000 Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, and Fire Services personnel have participated in this course. The success of this course is due to the interactive presentation of the material, which emphasizes both speaking skills and culturally-based nonverbal cues. Participants leave the course able to use basic Spanish to gather information and communicate instructions during emergency situations. The curriculum team greatly benefited from Ms. Sherwin's knowledge and expertise. Sincerely, Lalaine B. Little ***************************************************************************************** * I attended the Intermediate Spanish for Law Enforcement in Allen, Texas from 6/27/05-6/29/05. I would like to commend Blanca Sherwin for a great experience. I had put off this course for years and was only attending because TCLEOSE made it mandatory. Before attending, I had absolutely no desire to learn Spanish. At the end of the 3 day course, Officer Sherwin left me with a hunger to learn even more of the language. I intend to take the 40 hr advanced course in the near future. I'm glad I was able to be a part of this class, and to meet such a talented instructor. Officer Sherwin's knowledge of the language and culture is a great asset to TEEX and the Texas law enforcement community. Please pass on to Officer Sherwin and her supervisors my compliments. Thank you, Brad Murphey, Corporal Texas Christian University Police Department ***************************************************************************************** * Blanca, I had two of my officers attend your course last week Officer MT Brown and Officer CR Harn. They both came back praising how excellent the course was how professional you were. They both high recommended the course to their fellow officers. I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to attend your class and for your professionalism. Sgt MA Chalifoux #2353 FWPD NPD-7 ***************************************************************************************** * I'M sorry I had to run out after taking the test. I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the class. Thank you for making it interesting and for making it relevant to what we are doing as police officers and not just another boring class. Please let me know if I can ever do anything for you, and please keep in touch. If there is any other classes please let me know and I will pass it on. Thanks again Senior Corporal David Conley Dallas Police Department ***************************************************************************************** * Hello Blanca, First thanks for your Int. Kevin Nance #554 UTAPD Training ***************************************************************************************** * I recently attended your course, Intermediate Spanish for Dispatchers. I found the course to be very helpful and offered a tremendous insight into the Spanish culture. Your knowledge allowed you to deliver a lot of information, yet still hold the interest of the class by making it fun and interactive. I would highly recommend this course to fellow dispatchers. Thank you, Carol Ames Public Safety Dispatcher ***************************************************************************************** * |
